Friday 13th March

We have had a fantastic week in Year 2, and the children have worked incredibly hard in all of their lessons. Their enthusiasm for learning has been wonderful to see, and we are so proud of the effort they are putting into their work across the curriculum.

English
This week in English we have been exploring our final writing tool: questions. The children practised using a variety of question starters and enjoyed thinking about how questions can make writing more engaging. Next week we will be ‘boxing and hugging’ our text, which will help us organise our ideas ready to write our own diary entry in the final week of term.

Maths
In Maths, we completed our unit on fractions and the children worked very hard to show their understanding. We have now begun learning about data handling, including tally charts, tables, pictograms and block diagrams. In the final week of term we will move on to time, focusing on telling and reading analogue clocks. You can support your child at home by helping them become confident with reading o’clock and half past on an analogue clock by the end of term.

Assessment Week
Next week will be our Spring Term Assessment Week.

  • Monday morning: Reading assessment (comprehension)
  • Tuesday morning: Maths assessment
  • Wednesday and Thursday: Additional reading assessments

Please make sure your child brings their reading book and reading record to school on Wednesday and Thursday, as we will aim to change all books on these days instead of their usual change days.

We are also looking forward to meeting with you at Parents’ Evenings on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th March, where we will discuss your child’s progress.

Foundation Subjects
In our wider learning this week we have explored some exciting topics:

  • History: We learned what a ‘source’ is and looked closely at Samuel Pepys’ diary extracts. We also discussed why the Great Fire spread so quickly and lasted for so long.
  • Science: We have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken, exploring the different stages from egg to chick to adult chicken.
  • DT: The children learned about the process of how flour is made and also had the opportunity to make butter. They worked hard shaking the cream until it turned into butter, and we all enjoyed tasting it afterwards!
  • PE: Practising accuracy with underarm throwing.
  • Music: Beginning to explore musical notation.

Show and Tell
Next week we will resume Show and Tell. If they would like to bring something in next week, it is the turn of:
Matthew, Mia, Niven, Norah, Phoenix and Reggie.

Change Maker Project
There is just over a week left for your child to complete an activity at home for the Change Maker Project. This half-term’s value is forgiveness. We have talked about the four activities in the booklet (see the Resources section for more details) and would really appreciate your support in helping your child choose and complete one activity.

Easter Service
Our Easter Service will take place on Thursday 26th at 6pm. The children have already started learning their song, “One Life,” and they are very excited to perform it for you. Please make sure this date is in your diary, as it promises to be a very special service.
