St Mary's Rickmansworth Church of England Primary School Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing; together shining a light

British Values

Promoting Fundamental British Values

At St Mary’s, we take seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern, multicultural Britain. Rooted in our Christian vision, we nurture our children to aspire, flourish, and shine their light in the world. Through our ethos, curriculum, and wider school life, we ensure that fundamental British values are not only taught but lived. Our children develop an embedded understanding of Democracy, The Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs, equipping them to contribute positively to society with confidence and integrity.

We believe that deep learning happens in meaningful contexts. Across the curriculum, children engage in rich discussions and interactive experiences that enable them to see British values in action. They have opportunities to reflect on big questions, explore different perspectives, and strengthen their moral and ethical understanding. Through our commitment to valuing every voice, showing kindness in our actions, and fostering courageous advocacy, children learn that they have the power to shape their world.

Embracing Diversity, Strengthening Community

Our children are given wide exposure beyond their local community, developing a deep respect for different cultures and traditions. From participating in local and church-led initiatives to engaging in charity projects, sports competitions, and visits to places of cultural and historical significance, they learn to see themselves as part of something bigger. These experiences help them appreciate diversity, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the richness of our shared world. At St Mary’s, our values-based ethos ensures that every child feels a sense of belonging, where difference is embraced and respected.

Living Out British Values at St Mary’s

Democracy: A Voice That Matters

Democracy is woven into school life. Pupil Voice is at the heart of decision-making, with children contributing through our School Council, Ethos Council, Eco Council, and Sports Council. Our children understand that their voices matter and that respectful debate is a vital part of shaping a fair and just society. Through these councils, pupils develop leadership skills, learning to represent others, negotiate ideas, and take responsibility for driving positive change. Leadership opportunities extend further in Year 6, where all pupils take on Positions of Responsibility, helping to run aspects of school life and serve as role models for younger children.

The Rule of Law: Living With Integrity

Children learn that laws exist to protect, guide, and create fairness in society. Through everyday school life, our behaviour expectations, and discussions in Collective Worship, they understand that choices have consequences. We reinforce these values with our Mini Policing programme, helping children develop a deep respect for the responsibilities we all share in upholding justice.

Individual Liberty: Flourishing in a Safe and Supportive Environment

At St Mary’s, we help children develop the confidence to make informed choices while knowing they are in a safe, supportive environment. Through our curriculum, children learn about their rights and responsibilities - whether in E-Safety, SMSC, or PSHE - and are encouraged to think critically about the world around them. By participating in school councils, House Teams, and a range of extracurricular activities, they learn to express their ideas with courage and respect.

Mutual Respect: Rooted in Christian Values

Our ethos is built on respect for every individual as a unique child of God. Through our Behaviour Policy, Collective Worship, and class discussions, children learn to honour one another’s voices, show kindness, and build meaningful relationships. Adults model these values daily, while older pupils take on roles of responsibility, mentoring younger children and demonstrating what it means to shine a light for others.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs: Learning From One Another

As a Church of England school, we celebrate the richness of faith and culture, fostering a broad and respectful worldview in our children. Through visits to places of worship and engaging learning in RE and PSHCE, we help children appreciate and embrace differences. Our 'No Outsiders' programme complements this learning, reinforcing messages of inclusion, respect, and diversity. We also welcome speakers and workshops into school, providing opportunities for children to hear diverse perspectives and deepen their understanding of equality. Initiatives such as Anti-Bullying Week and Black History Month further reinforce our commitment to challenging prejudice and championing inclusion.

Prevent Duty

We also have a statutory duty to protect our children from radicalisation and extremism. The PREVENT duty sits alongside Fundamental British Values- educating our children about tolerance and respect for others.
