Friday 24th April
We had another fabulous week in Year 5!
In Maths, we are understanding what percentages are and that 'per cent' means parts per hundred. The children have been able to make connections between fractions, decimals and percentages and convert between.
We have begun exploring our model text in English and the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring suspense writing and the toolkit features that make a piece of writing suspenseful such as short sentences and rhetorical questions. The children completed a 'cold write' and have already begun to demonstrate their enthusiasm for this writing unit.
We began our new topic of 'Space' on Science and the children took to the playground to explore the distance between the planets in our solar system using a measuring wheel. They were surprised to discover how some of the terrestrial planets are relatively close whereas some of the gas giant planets have very large distances between them.
In History, we began to explore our new topic on the 'Golden Age of Islam'. The children were able to successfully draw upon their previous historical knowledge of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons to be able to compare the similarities and differences between the two civilisations in the early 1000s.
