Friday 1st May

In RE, we explored why Rama and Sita are considered aspirational figures within the Hindu faith. Today, we were delighted to welcome Deepa, a parent at St Mary’s, into our classroom. She kindly shared her knowledge and personal experiences of Hinduism with the children, helping to bring our learning to life. We are very grateful to her for taking the time to speak with us.

In Maths, we have been focusing on time. The children have varying levels of confidence with telling the time, so any support you can provide at home with this important life skill would be greatly appreciated. We have been learning how many days are in each month of the year — the “knuckle trick” has been particularly helpful! We have also been converting between units of time, such as weeks into days, years into months and minutes into seconds. In addition, we have been practising both 12-hour and 24-hour time.

In English, we have completed learning our model text and have been analysing how suspense is created within the story using a range of suspense-writing techniques.

In Science, the children worked in pairs to make predictions about whether circuits would be complete or incomplete before assembling and testing them.

In PSHE, we discussed the choices we make in life, the choices that are made for us, and the things humans have no choice about. This led to some very thoughtful and reflective discussions.

In Geography, we have been learning about renewable energy, with a particular focus on wind energy. We explored how wind is formed and how wind turbines harness this energy to generate electricity.

In DT, we have planned and designed our Electrical Loop Games. The children carefully considered the creation process as well as their intended target audience.

During Guided Reading, we read and discussed the opening chapter of The Outlaw Varjak Paw.

In Spelling, we have been learning words containing the “ch” spelling that makes a “sh” sound. We discovered that many of these words originate from French. The spelling lists have been sent home on paper and are also available on Doodle for additional practice. If your child practises using the paper sheet, please ensure it is returned by the following Friday so they can earn their house point.
