Friday 15th May

We had the pleasure of welcoming Miss Brown from the Sports Partnership yesterday for a fantastic Quick Fire Cricket session. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning new batting skills and techniques for stopping the ball. It was a fun and energetic lesson! I have also compiled a video of the photographs on Google Classroom for you to enjoy.

In Maths, we have been learning about money, particularly how to find change from a given amount — something that can sometimes be quite tricky. We explored a useful strategy: instead of calculating £20.00 − £13.25, we adjusted the numbers to £19.99 − £13.24. The difference remains exactly the same, but the subtraction becomes much more manageable with less exchanging.

In English, we have been “hugging” the model text as we developed our own suspense stories. The children created writing full of intrigue and tension, carefully building fear and excitement without giving too much away.

In PSHE, we explored the 7 Rs: recycle, reuse, rot, reduce, refuse, rethink and repair. We discussed how these actions can help us care for our environment and make more sustainable choices.

In RE, we learned about the Hindu celebration of Diwali, the Festival of Light. We discovered that it takes place over five days during October or November and marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. The celebration originates from the story of Rama and Sita. After Sita was kidnapped by the evil king Ravana and later rescued, lamps were lit to guide Rama and Sita safely home.

In Science, we continued our work on circuits by investigating insulators and conductors through practical testing activities.

During Guided Reading, we explored an extract from Ted and his Time-Travelling Toilet. As the text focused on the Roman army, the children were able to build confidently on their previous learning about the Romans.

In Spelling, we focused on the prefixes re- and sub-. We learned that re- means “again” and sub- means “under”.

In Music, the children have been learning a new song on their recorders. I had the pleasure of listening to what Mrs Wilson has been teaching them, and it was wonderful to hear the progress they are making.
