Friday 22nd May

What a fabulous week Year 3 have had, with the added highlights of becoming ocean explorers for STEM Week and planting our pea plants in the secret garden. We cannot wait to see the fruits of our labour next half term!
In English, we have been applying the suspense toolkit and the new writing skills we have learnt to plan and write our own suspense stories. We will be finalising and publishing these when we return after the half-term break.
In Maths, we have been exploring adding, subtracting, and partitioning fractions in a variety of ways. After the holidays, we will be finishing off this unit by applying these skills to unit and non-unit fractions.
Foundation Subjects
History – We compared the unique achievements of the Stone Age with those of Ancient Egypt by researching and creating fact-file pages covering archaeological finds such as Stonehenge, cave paintings, hieroglyphics, and the Pyramids of Giza.
Science – For STEM Week, we took inspiration from Sir David Attenborough and took on the role of ocean explorers. The playground transformed into the Indian Ocean, where we discovered that the Maldives and the surrounding coral reefs were facing a huge plastic pollution problem. Working in teams, we collected plastic waste and rescued a few ocean creatures along the way. When we returned to the classroom, we were given the task of putting this waste plastic to better use by transforming it into ocean creatures to highlight the importance of protecting our oceans.
PSHE – We finished our current unit on ‘Being My Best’ by reflecting on the theme of health and setting our own health goals.
Home Learning
Doodle
Please continue to support your child’s progress by accessing the Doodle Learning platform and ensuring they remain in the green zone for English, Maths, and Times Tables.
Reading
Please ensure you listen to your child read at least five times each week and sign their reading record on each occasion. This allows them to be rewarded with a star stamp for their efforts. Please also ensure that reading books are brought into school on their allocated changing day, as noted on the front of their reading records.
Spellings
There are no spellings this week, but please continue to practise previous spelling rules alongside some extra handwriting practice. Your child could write a holiday diary, letter, recount, or story and see how many of our previous spelling words they can include!
