5th June

This week in Year 6, we took part in an exciting morning of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) at York House. The pupils worked together to complete a range of challenges, demonstrating excellent teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. They approached each activity with enthusiasm, resilience and determination, supporting one another every step of the way.
In English, we have begun exploring our new persuasive writing unit by looking closely at our model text. The children investigated the differences between formal and informal language and had great fun rewriting sentences to match different audiences and purposes. They showed a growing understanding of how language choices can affect tone and were able to adapt their writing to sound more formal or conversational.
In Maths, we have been revisiting our learning on fractions, decimals and percentages to help prepare the pupils for the transition to secondary school. The class have been applying their knowledge to a range of reasoning and problem-solving activities, helping to strengthen their confidence with these important concepts.
This week, our Collective Worship sessions have focused on perseverance and the importance of not giving up, even when things become difficult. The class reflected thoughtfully on how resilience can help us overcome challenges, learn from mistakes and continue working towards our goals.
In History, we have started our new unit on how children's lives have changed throughout history. This week, the class examined a range of historical sources to identify the continuities and changes in children's lives over time. They explored how aspects such as education, work and leisure have evolved, while also considering what has remained the same. The children demonstrated excellent historical enquiry skills by using evidence from sources to support their ideas and conclusions.
In Art, the pupils have started a new unit on exploring identity. This week, they created simple self-portraits using photographs as a reference, focusing carefully on contour lines and features with strong definition and edges. The children demonstrated excellent observation skills as they worked to capture their unique features and develop their understanding of portrait drawing techniques.
Year Six have also begun an exciting project in which they will design their own school in a country selected through our World Cup sweepstake. Each child has been assigned a different country and will be researching its culture, traditions and geography. As part of the project, they will design a school that reflects their chosen country, including traditional foods, clothing, customs and other cultural features. We are looking forward to seeing their creativity and research skills develop over the coming weeks.
Today they enjoyed a special trip to Rickmansworth School to watch a performance of Shrek JR. They demonstrated excellent behaviour and represented our school brilliantly. The class thoroughly enjoyed the performance and had a fantastic morning watching the talented cast bring the well-loved story to life.
Keep up the good work Year 6. Have a wonderful weekend.
