12th June

This week in Science, we continued our topic, Living Things and Their Habitats: Conservation. We explored the issue of deforestation and researched its impact on the environment. Using our knowledge of persuasive writing from English, we then created speeches to encourage others to protect our forests and wildlife.

In English, we have been learning the model text King Midas. We focused on using conjunctive adverbs, such as additionally, as well as rhetorical questions and the rule of three to make our writing more engaging and persuasive.

In Maths, we began our new topic on Shape. We identified and ordered different types of angles, including acute angles (less than 90°), right angles (90°), obtuse angles (between 90° and 180°) and straight-line angles (180°). We also explored the properties of different triangles: equilateral triangles (all sides and angles are equal), isosceles triangles (two sides and two angles are equal), scalene triangles (all sides are different lengths) and right-angled triangles (which contain a 90° angle). We learned that the three interior angles of a triangle always add up to 180°.

In History, we started our exciting Ancient Greece topic. We learned that Ancient Greek civilisation lasted from approximately 2200 BC to 30 BC and was divided into six key periods: the Minoan Civilisation, Mycenaean Civilisation, Dark Ages, Archaic Period, Golden Age and Hellenistic Period.

During Guided Reading, we studied an extract from The Last Bear, which linked beautifully with our Science and English learning.

In Art, we began our new topic, Telling Stories. We explored the work of illustrator Laura Carlin and filmmaker Shaun Tan before choosing our preferred artist and creating a double-page spread in our sketchbooks inspired by their work.

In RE, we continued our learning about Creation. This week, we explored the temptation experienced by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and discussed the choices they made.

Year 4 completed their Multiplication Tables Check this week. A huge well done to all the children for their focus, determination and effort. We are incredibly proud of them.

In Spelling, we learned about possessive apostrophes. We identified that singular nouns take an apostrophe followed by s (’s), for example, Mrs Martin’s classroom. We also learned that when a plural noun already ends in s, an apostrophe is simply added after the s, for example, the dogs’ park.
