Friday 19th June

What a fantastic week of learning Year 5 have enjoyed!

Miss Bacchus has thoroughly enjoyed teaching Year 5 this week and has been incredibly impressed by the children's enthusiasm, positive attitudes and willingness to challenge themselves across all areas of the curriculum.

In English, the children completed a short piece of writing using the persuasive toolkit skills they have been developing. They challenged themselves to include modal verbs and alliteration to encourage others to help save our planet. The children also completed their PIRA Reading Assessment and worked hard to demonstrate their reading skills.

In Maths, we focused on adding and subtracting decimals, exploring efficient mental calculation strategies and investigating decimal sequences. The children showed increasing confidence when applying their understanding of place value to solve problems.

Our Science learning explored how children grow and change over time. We investigated different ways of measuring growth and carried out an enquiry comparing hand spans, considering how results can vary depending on the methods used.

In DT, we explored foods produced in the UK and discussed how diets differ around the world. We learnt about foods commonly eaten in countries including India, Japan and Kenya, helping us develop a greater understanding of different cultures and traditions.

During RE, we looked at the work of Carl and Celiene and considered how prayer can be made more accessible. The children rewrote the Lord’s Prayer using modern language while reflecting on its meaning and importance for Christians.

In Music, we created vocal compositions inspired by pictures. We used colours and shapes to represent pitch, dynamics and tempo before creating our own pieces of music based on colours and recording them using graphic scores.

In PE, the children practised long jump, shot put and relay events in preparation for Sports Day, alongside developing their tennis skills. On Friday, Year 5 spent the day training as Play Leaders. They learnt what it takes to be a positive sports leader before planning and delivering warm-up activities and games for Reception and Year 1 pupils. The children showed excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills throughout the day.

Well done, Year 5, for another week of hard work, enthusiasm and fantastic learning.
