A very warm welcome to Year Two

The children have been excited and enthusiastic settling into Year 2, in our first full week back. Classroom routines have been introduced and our foundation subject topics have been launched. We even had a visit from a bushy-bearded, loud-mouthed pirate Captain!

In Maths, this week we revisited teen numbers and have begun to explore 2-digit numbers, making these in a variety of ways. This will continue next week. In English, we began to explore this half-term's text 'The Pirate Quest', a descriptive short story about Captain Finn McGraw and his crew. The first of the tools in our 'Toolkit' : adjectives and 2A phrases.

Foundation subjects:

In PE, we started our dance unit on water, pairing up to choreograph movements 

In RE, we explored the Christian story of Jonah, acting it out and finding out where it fits within the 'Big Bible Story'

In Music, we listened to an orchestra and narrator play and tell the story of Goldilocks, revisiting the terms 'dynamics' and 'tempo'.

In Geography, we had a visit from Captain Bushybeard who flung himself into the classroom in search of a crew to join him for his next expedition. Discovering that Year 2 had few pirate skills as yet, he left vowing to return on our Pirate Day (Tuesday 20^th October)

In Science, we have started our topic, 'Uses of Everyday Materials' by identifying different materials and their properties.

I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday (15th) at 9m for the 'Year 2 Meet the Teacher' presentation where details of class routines, expectations and curriculum will be shared. For now, for clarification:

I will be teaching Monday to Thursday, with Mrs Maxwell teaching the class on a Friday.

 PE days are Wednesday and Thursday - please can children come to school dressed in PE kit.

Home Reading

Having assessed all children and assigned books, please can I encourage you to begin our Year 2 reading journey with zeal! As in Year 1, please  sign their Reading Record each time you hear them read; 5 times a week is the aim so that children can get their star stamps and begin collecting their badges. The books (including the signed Reading Record) are required in school every day but will be changed on the allocated day only - written on the front of their Reading Record.

Pink, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange levels: Please read each book with your child 3 times so that they have the  opportunity to build up their fluency of vocabulary and understanding of the text.

Turquoise, Purple, Gold, White, Lime levels: read the book through once as they are significantly longer but check for accuracy of unfamiliar vocabulary, and practise fluency as they read from the start to the end of each sentence.
