Year 5 – Another Busy Week!

It has been another engaging and busy week of learning in Year 5!

In English, we continued to explore more features of our writing toolkit, including ‘-ing, location, -ed’ sentences and dialogue. We put these techniques into practice through a range of short-burst writing activities, thinking carefully about how different sentence structures can make our writing more interesting and effective.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of rounding, as well as comparing and ordering numbers up to 100,000. We have been using our knowledge of place value to help us explain and justify our answers.

This week, our Guided Reading learning linked particularly well with Deaf Awareness Week. Through our text, we explored what it can be like to experience the world differently and discussed the importance of understanding and respecting the experiences of others. We delved into some rich vocabulary, including identity, experience, disabilities, isolated, external and amplified, considering both the meaning of these words and how they contributed to our understanding of the text. It also gave us an opportunity to think about inclusion, communication and the different ways people connect with the world around them.

In Music, we worked collaboratively in groups to plan a musical theatre scene incorporating singing, acting and dancing. There were lots of creative ideas as we thought about how all three elements could work together to tell a story.

In Science, we learned how water resistance acts on objects and explored some of the factors that can affect it. We also began to make links with our previous learning about air resistance, identifying similarities and differences between these two forces.

Mini Police has continued this week too, with Year 5 enjoying another session as part of this exciting programme. The children are really embracing the opportunity to work alongside our local police team, learning more about their role within the community and developing important skills such as teamwork, responsibility, communication and making positive choices. It has been lovely to see how enthusiastic and engaged they are during these sessions.
