2nd October 2026

What a busy and exciting week we have had in Year 1! We have been learning lots of new things across all of our subjects and have enjoyed sharing our ideas, asking questions and exploring new concepts.
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of greater than, less than and equal to. We have been looking carefully at different numbers and quantities and comparing them to see which is bigger, smaller or the same. We have also been learning to use the mathematical symbols > , < and = to show our thinking. The children have enjoyed using practical resources and sharing their reasoning with their friends.
In English, we have continued to develop our understanding of adjectives and how they can be used to describe things in more detail. We have also introduced nouns, learning that they are words used to name people, places, animals and things. The children have been enjoying spotting nouns and adjectives in sentences and thinking carefully about how they can make their writing more interesting.
Our Science learning this week has focused on materials. We explored a range of different materials and thought carefully about where they come from. We worked together to identify which materials are natural and which are man-made, discussing examples and explaining our ideas. The children were fantastic at using their observations to help them sort and classify different materials.
We were very lucky to have a special visitor come in to talk to us about Harvest. We learned about how Christians celebrate Harvest as a time to say thank you for all the good things in their lives, including food, family, friends and the world around them. The children enjoyed listening to the talk and thinking about the things they are thankful for. It was lovely to hear their thoughtful ideas and reflections.
In History, we travelled back in time to find out how children in the past celebrated their birthdays. We looked at different ways birthdays were celebrated and compared them with how we celebrate birthdays today. The children enjoyed spotting the similarities and differences between birthday celebrations in the past and present. They were particularly interested in discovering how celebrations, presents, food and games have changed over time!
Thank you for all the food gifts sent in yesterday at our Harvest service, and also for the grown-ups who were able to join us, and then accompany the class back to school. It was appreciated.
Home learning
Please keep reading weekly 5 times and recording it in their reading records.
Next week we are going to be giving out weekly handwriting and rocket words. These need to be practised reading and writing, to ensure the children know how to spell them and read them.
Next week we will start our Words of the Week that we will focus on for the week. Please practice these at home reading and spelling them: today, of, said
