9th October 2026

What a fantastic week we have had in Year 1! The children have been busy learning, exploring and developing their skills across all our subjects.

In English, we have been busy designing and describing our very own monsters. The children have used their imaginations to create some wonderful and unusual creatures. We have been thinking carefully about what our monsters look like and using descriptive words to bring them to life.

In Maths, we have been comparing numbers using a number line to help us. The children have been practising identifying which numbers are greater than, less than or equal to each other. The number line has been a useful tool to help us put numbers in order and explain our mathematical thinking.

In Science, we carried out an exciting experiment to investigate which objects sink and which float. The children made predictions, tested different objects in water and observed what happened. We also explored why some objects sink, discussing how their properties can affect whether they float or sink. The children enjoyed investigating and sharing their ideas.

In RE, we revisited the story of The Prodigal Son to explore why Christians believe it is important to forgive others. We discussed what the story teaches us about forgiveness, saying sorry and giving people another chance. The children shared some thoughtful ideas about how we can show forgiveness and kindness in our own lives.

In History, we have been comparing life in the past with life in the present. The children explored how the things people used in the past were different from the things we use today. We have been developing our understanding of how everyday life has changed over time and thinking about what life might have been like for children in the past.

In Music, we have been working hard to find the pulse in music and clap along in time. We have been using a catchy song to help us practise keeping a steady beat while singing our names. The children have been developing their listening skills, sense of rhythm and confidence as they join in with the music.

Home Learning

Please continue to read with your child 5 times a week and record each reading session in their reading record. Regular reading at home helps to build confidence, fluency and a love of reading.

Our Words of the Week are :

  • are
  • were
  • was

We will be focusing on these words throughout the week, so please practise reading and spelling them at home. You could write them together, spot them in books or use them in simple sentences to help your child remember them.

Changemaker project

Don't forget about our Changemaker Project! This term, our value is Friendship, and the children only need to complete one of the challenges linked to this value. I have attached the booklet at the bottom for you to look through with your child and choose which challenge they would like to complete.

Doodle Learning

I have also given out Doodle Learning logins to most of the children. If your child has not received theirs yet, I will be giving out the remaining logins on Monday. Doodle Learning is an online learning platform that helps children practise Maths and English in a fun, interactive way. It uses short activities, games and questions to help children build confidence, improve their skills and develop positive learning habits.
