16th October 2026

We have had another busy and exciting week in Year 1, exploring new ideas, getting creative and reflecting on some important themes.
In English, we have been developing our descriptive writing skills by creating our very own monsters! The children have been using their imaginations to make wonderful, wacky and sometimes scary creatures. Once our monsters were created, we brought them to life by thinking carefully about what they look like and how we could describe them. We have been exploring descriptive words to help our readers picture our fantastic creations.
In Maths, we have been looking at part-part-whole models, helping us to understand how numbers can be made up of two or more parts that combine to make a whole.
In Science, we have been investigating different materials and exploring the difference between absorbent and non-absorbent materials. We have been thinking about which materials soak up water and which ones do not. The children have been making predictions and taking part in an experiment to discover which material is the least absorbent. It has been a great opportunity to develop our scientific thinking, make observations and talk about what we noticed!
In RE, we have been reflecting on what we have learnt about what Christians believe God is like. We have also spent time thinking about the meaning of forgiveness and what it means to us. The children explored what forgiving others might look like in everyday life and shared their ideas as part of a beautiful Tree of Forgiveness display. We thought about how saying sorry, accepting apologies, showing kindness and giving others another chance can help us build positive relationships. We are so proud of the thoughtful ideas the children shared!
In History, we have been learning about why people wear poppies on Remembrance Sunday. The children have been exploring the meaning of the poppy and how it helps us remember the soldiers and others who have died in wars. This has encouraged us to think about remembrance, respect and the importance of remembering people from the past.
It has been a fantastic week full of creativity, curiosity and thoughtful reflection. We are so proud of the enthusiasm the children have shown across all our subjects and look forward to another exciting week of learning together!
Notices
Please bring reading books into school every day next week, as we will be changing all books over the three days. We will be sending home three books for the half term to help keep the children reading regularly. However, any reading is beneficial, including books you already have at home!
As we have a shorter turnaround for changing books next week, please aim to read at least twice to earn a reading stamp. Thank you for your continued support in helping the children develop their love of reading!
St Mary's Changemaker
If your child still has a Changemaker to complete, please make sure it is brought into school by Wednesday next week. This will allow us to share their wonderful work during Collective Worship, where they will receive their Friendship Sticker.
We will still be accepting Changemakers after half term, but any handed in after Wednesday will not be shared in Collective Worship but will receive their sticker.
