Friday, 14th November

On Thursday this week, we were lucky to receive a special visit from the Watford Schools Trust. The focus was on Jesus in art, and we spent time looking closely at Holman Hunt’s famous painting. We learnt how artists use symbols to tell a story, and we spotted lots of hidden details that show different ideas about Jesus, such as his two crowns, the halo designed using the sunrise from Bethlehem and rotting fruit at his feet.

In Science, we continued our work on light by exploring reflection. We tested a range of materials to see which ones reflected light the best. Some of the results surprised us, and we enjoyed investigating how light behaves on shiny, dull, smooth, and bumpy surfaces.

We have been learning about the First World War in History, and on Thursday, we learnt about what life was like for soldiers living in the trenches, including the difficult conditions they faced every day. We also discovered some of the common illnesses and injuries soldiers suffered, such as trench foot, gas poisoning, shrapnel wounds, and shell shock.

In Art, we began our topic on Wave Bowls. To practise using light and shadow, we sketched different objects and tried to show where the light was coming from to make our drawings look more realistic and three-dimensional.
