14th November

Friday 14th November

We have had a busy and productive week in Year 4, filled with creativity, curiosity and fantastic learning across the curriculum.

English - In English, we have been focusing on learning our Cloud Goblin model text. The children have been practising the use of coordinating conjunctions (but, however, yet, although), applying commas in lists, using fronted adverbials, and exploring generalisers such as the majoritythe minority and some. The class have shown great enthusiasm and growing confidence as they embed these skills in their writing.

Maths - This week, we wrapped up our work on Area and began our new topic: Multiplication and Division. We explored the 3 and 6 times tables, looking closely at patterns and relationships. The children noticed that every multiple of 6 is also a multiple of 3, although not every multiple of 3 belongs in the 6 times table. We also looked at digit sums—for example, 3 + 5 + 7 = 15—and how they help us identify multiples of 3. A lively song helped us memorise the 6 times table and added lots of fun to our learning.6 Times Table Song (Cover of Shake It Off by Taylor Swift!)

Religious Education - In RE, we reflected on the true meaning of Christmas, focusing on the birth of Christ as the incarnation of the Holy Spirit.

Guided Reading - During Guided Reading, we explored a gripping extract from Letters from the Lighthouse. This thought-provoking World War II novel sparked some excellent discussion and thoughtful responses.

History - Continuing our topic on the Romans, we investigated why they chose to invade Britain. The class learned about the valuable resources—such as cattle, tin, iron, gold and iron bars—that motivated Roman expansion.

Art - Art was a real highlight this week. The children experimented with different mark-making techniques including zigzags, dots, curved lines and crosses. Using sketching pencils, they created expressive and individual pieces that showed real focus and enjoyment.

Science - In Science, we began our new topic: Living Things and Their Habitats. The children learned how different living things are suited to particular environments, laying the foundation for further exploration.

Spellings - Spellings were handed out today. This week, we are focusing on the -ied suffix. Children may choose to practise on Doodle Learning or on their sheet. Please note that the spelling test will take place on Friday 21st November.

Reading - A huge well done to the four children who achieved their bronze reading badges this week! This is a fantastic achievement. Remember, reading regularly with your child is one of the best ways to support their fluency, imagination and comprehension skills.

Home Learning - Doodle English and Maths assignments, Spelling practise, TTRS and Reading 5 times a week. Completed by the evening of Thursday 20th November.
