What a Roman-packed week we’ve had!
The children have thrown themselves into our Roman activities with enthusiasm. They designed and created their own mosaic tiles, learnt to play a traditional Roman game called Nine Men’s Morris, experimented with writing their names in Roman lettering on papyrus using a stylus, and even crafted their own Roman brooches. It has been a wonderfully creative and hands-on week.
In English, we have continued “hugging the text”. It has been fantastic to see the imaginative ideas the class have used to develop their non-chronological reports about their chosen goblins. Their creativity and commitment to improving their writing really shines through.
In Guided Reading, we explored a non-fiction text called Run Like a Girl. The children were inspired by Keely Hodgkinson’s dedication on her journey to becoming an Olympic athlete and reflected on how they might apply that same determination in their own lives. We are also continuing to develop our reading fluency at the start of each session.
In Maths, we worked on multiplying three single digits together. Some methods are definitely more efficient than others! For example, when calculating 6 × 7 × 2, many of us preferred multiplying 6 and 7, then simply doubling the result—far easier than multiplying 14 by 6. After all, we aim to be efficient mathematicians!
We also explored missing-number addition calculations and used strategies such as ‘finding the difference’ or using the inverse (subtraction) to help solve them. Today, we worked on improving our speed when completing the multiplication grid.
In PSHE, we discussed a range of emotions and how these might be shown. We also thought carefully about how to make a sincere and thoughtful apology when things go wrong.
In Art, we added paint and stitched details onto our volcano, tsunami, and earthquake-inspired pieces. A huge thank you to Lily and Tilly for helping thread so many needles! We then reflected on our artwork from across the half term, evaluating our final pieces and the sketches in our books.
Homework:
Doodle English and Maths assignments, 14 minutes of TTRS, and reading at least five times per week. It’s fantastic to see so many children have already earned their bronze reading badge!
