Friday 16th January

Despite the weather this week, we have had great fun in class exploring our new topics.

In English, we were introduced to the remaining tools in our tool kit: prepositions, using our senses, the conjunctions 'but' and 'because', and similes. The class composed some fantastic similes to describe how our main character, Pip, might fly - as fast as a peregrine falcon swooping down to the ground, as fast as an F16, and as fast as a supersonic jet! Very impressive! We can't wait to see their continued creativity and vocabulary next week.

In Maths we have continued to learn key concepts of multiplication: as repeated addition (2 + 2+ 2 + 2), as a sentence (There were 4 equal groups with 2 in each), using the language of multiplication ( 4 lots of 2) and using the multiplication symbol (4 x 2). Parental support and revision of this at home would be beneficial for many.

Foundation subject highlights:

Geography - we watched the introduction to an episode of 'Mastermind' before we spent time 'Shining a light' on Magnus Magnusson, whose legacy in part was as a conservationist. Rickmansworth town is to be our 'Chosen specialist subject' when we have our own Mastermind competition at the end of this topic:) We also spent time locating and then plotting London and Rickmansworth on maps.

RE - we began our topic by practising 'jumping for joy' and then learnt about the Jewish festival of Simchat Torah where celebration is given to the Jewish holy texts. We are in the process of arranging a trip to the synagogue in Northwood to see the Torah scrolls, as part of the visit.

Art: we explored the work of architect Hundertwasser and the organic, colourful buildings he created. The class were very surprised by the curvy, ‘wonky’ shapes he designed and that people could actually live in places like that!

Science – we have continued to look at the basic needs of humans
