It has been a busy first full week in Year 6, with lots of learning taking place across the curriculum!

Science
In Science, we explored the important roles of the arteries and veins within our circulatory system. We also recapped our understanding of the heart and its vital role in keeping our bodies supplied with oxygen and nutrients.

English
In English, we have begun learning our model text based on a portal story. We explored the four different sentence types: commands, questions, exclamations and statements. We then put our learning into practice by creating sentences using a list of three negative words, a dash and a rhetorical question. One of our examples was:

“Lice, rats, wet feet – how much more could the soldiers endure?”

We are looking forward to developing our writing further as we continue to explore the text.

Maths
Our focus in Maths has been place value. We have been reading and writing numbers up to ten million and developing our understanding of the value of each digit. We have also been practising estimating where different numbers belong on a number line.

PSHE
In PSHE, we explored the importance of collaboration. We discussed what makes someone a good collaborator and considered how working effectively with others can help us to achieve more.

RE
In RE, we evaluated Proverbs 6:16–19, considering the messages within the passage and discussing our own thoughts and interpretations.

Guided Reading
During Guided Reading, we enjoyed an extract from Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. The experiences of the main character, Tommo, led to some thoughtful and thought-provoking discussions. We considered the emotions and challenges faced by the characters and shared our own responses to the text.

Geography
We have been busy planning our very own independent fieldwork enquiries in Geography. First, we learned about the different data collection methods used by geographers. We then selected the methods that would best suit our own enquiry questions and carefully planned how, where and when we will collect our data. We are excited to put our plans into action!

DT
As part of our topic on structures in DT, we began designing our own miniature playground equipment. We researched a range of real playground designs to inspire our ideas before debating what makes a play environment both engaging and inclusive. We thought carefully about how our designs could be fun and accessible for everyone.

It has been a fantastic week of learning, discussion and collaboration, and we are looking forward to seeing where our learning takes us next week!
