Friday 2nd October 2026

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting church for the Harvest Festival and taking part in the celebrations this week! Thank you for all the food gifts sent in yesterday at our Harvest service, and also for the grown-ups who were able to join us, and then accompany the class back to school. It was appreciated.

Here is a look at what we have been learning across the curriculum.

In English, we continued to explore more features of our writing toolkit, including parenthesis and ‘outside-inside’ sentences. We applied these techniques through a variety of short burst writing activities. Next week, we will be boxing up our model text and beginning to plan our own narrative.

In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of place value. We completed a place value assessment and a baseline assessment for our next topic, addition and subtraction. We have been focusing on developing our reasoning skills and justifying our answers this week.

This week, our Guided Reading learning was based on an extract from Grandpa Frank’s Great Big Bucket List. We read the extract several times in different ways, with a focus on fluency and expression. We explored some rich vocabulary, including tradition, loophole, instruction, buoyant, rift and strict, considering both the meaning of these words and how they contributed to our understanding of the text. This also gave us an opportunity to think about what we would put on our own bucket lists!

In Art, we explored a range of Saxon artwork and used our sketchbooks to respond to the artefacts, materials and designs from the period. We created some fantastic work and had a go at sketching some of the artefacts we explored.

In Science, we investigated which shapes are most resistant to water. Using playdough, the children created different shapes and then recorded how long each shape took to move through the water. They found that the more streamlined an object is, the less water resistance it experiences and the faster it moves.

In History, we explored the reasons why the Angles, Saxons and Jutes settled in Britain. We debated whether they were pushed away from their homelands or pulled towards Britain.

Mini Police has continued this week too, with Year 5 enjoying another session on bullying and online safety. The children have also been preparing an assembly to share what they have learnt through the programme and to express their gratitude to Ryun, who has been leading it. We look forward to welcoming you to school next Friday, 9th October, at 2:30pm to watch us perform!
