Friday 9th October

What a busy and enjoyable week we have had!

The highlight of our week has most certainly been our trip to see The Lion King and participate in a movement and music workshop. The children engaged with great enthusiasm, set a fantastic example to others and represented St Mary’s amazingly well. It was lovely to see their faces light up as they learnt the lyrics and dance moves to He Lives in You.

We also enjoyed performing our mini-assembly and saying a final goodbye to Ryun, who has led all of our sessions. Thank you to everyone who came to watch us perform. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

In English, we boxed up our model text and planned our own narratives, thinking carefully about our main characters, the object being discovered, the dilemma and the resolution. We began considering how we could incorporate some of our toolkit features into our writing to make our stories engaging for the reader.

In Maths, we started our new topic of addition and subtraction. We explored different mental strategies and practised adding numbers with more than four digits, thinking carefully about the most efficient methods to use.

In Guided Reading, our learning was based on an extract from Journey to Freedom. We read the extract several times in different ways, focusing on fluency, expression and developing our understanding of the text. We explored some rich vocabulary, including slave, disputes, intruders, scattered, bolted and coffle, considering both the meanings of these words and how they contributed to our understanding of the events and characters. We also thought about how reading with expression can help bring a text to life.

In Art, we explored the designs and symbolism found in Anglo-Saxon crosses. Using graded pencils, we carefully drew a selection of crosses, focusing on line to define their shapes and intricate patterns. Please could the children bring in corrugated cardboard by Monday 12th October in preparation for making our Saxon crosses next week.

In Science, we used Newton meters carefully and accurately to investigate the effects of friction on different surfaces. We discussed how friction can be useful in everyday life, sharing examples such as rubber brakes, the soles of our shoes and tyres gripping the road. We considered how friction helps us to slow down and stop safely.

In History, we labelled the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms on a map of Britain and explored how they gained their names, considering the areas they occupied and the settlers who established them.
