6th March 2026
This week in Year 1 we have been busy learning lots of exciting new things across our subjects.
In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction and exploring different ways to take numbers away. We practised subtracting using number lines, counting back, and using objects to help us work out the answers. The children worked really hard to explain how they solved their subtraction problems.
In English, we have been learning how to write a recount. We talked about the steps we take when getting ready for school in the morning and then used this to help us write our own recounts. The children worked on putting their ideas in order and using time words such as first, next, and finally.
In Science, we have been learning about the different seasons. This week we focused on autumn and explored how some animals prepare for hibernation. We discussed how animals collect food, find warm places to sleep, and get ready for the colder weather.
In RE, we learnt about the story of Easter and discussed why it is an important celebration for Christians.
In PE, we have been practising controlling a ball using both our hands and feet. The children enjoyed developing their coordination and practising their control through different activities and games.
To support learning at home, please continue to read at least five times a week and record this in your child’s reading record. Spellings have gone out this week, so regular practice will be helpful. Please also keep up with handwriting practice, ensuring letters are formed correctly.
Thank you for your continued support.
