Friday 27th February
Welcome back to the second half of the spring term and the period of Lent. We have had a lovely week, ending with a journey down the yellow brick road to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz. Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed seeing the production, and this led us perfectly into the start of our new English model, which is linked to the story.
In English, we had a letter arrive in our classroom from Dorothy, telling her Aunt Em all about how she ended up in Oz. This model will be a key focus for our upcoming English lessons and the toolkits that we will begin to explore and work on next week.
In Maths, we have begun our new unit on Length and Perimeter. This week we focused on reading measurements in mm, cm and m. Next week we will be linking this to adding and subtracting lengths, as well as exploring the process of working out a shape’s perimeter.
Foundation Subjects
Geography – We looked at deserts around the world and started to think about the key features of these environments. Next week we will be compiling a fact file about the Sahara Desert.
Art – We have started to paint our pop art food sculptures and will finish adding the finer details next week.
Science – We have started a unit on skeletons and muscles. This week we explored how the various food groups help to support our bodies.
PSHE – We looked at what the term volunteer means and who comes into school as a volunteer to support our learning.
Music – We have started a singing unit that focusses on the call-and-response technique used by Vikings when rowing their boats.
Home Learning:
Doodle – Please continue to support your child’s progress by accessing the Doodle Learning platform and remaining in the green zone for English, Maths and Times Tables.
Reading – Please ensure that you listen to your child read at least five times during the week and sign their reading record each time.
Spellings – Below are this week’s spelling words to practise with your child, both in isolation and within a sentence. There are also five bonus words for those who would like to take on a spelling challenge. This week’s spelling rule focusses on apostrophes for contraction and singular possession.
we’re, they’re, couldn’t, haven’t, hasn’t, shouldn’t, didn’t, there’s
Challenge words:
doesn’t, who’ll, they’re, they’d, aren’t
Change Maker Project - This half-term we are focusing on the value of ‘Forgiveness’. Your child has selected an activity that they wish to work on during our class-based collective worship this week. Please continue supporting them as they collect and record evidence of their chosen activity.
Next Week:
We cannot wait to see the children’s fabulous book character costumes for World Book Day on Thursday 5th March.
For our Science lesson next week, we will be looking at traffic light nutrition labels on food packaging. Please could you send in any packaging that you no longer need so that the children can cut out and examine a wide variety of different food labels. Many thanks!
Wishing you all a lovely weekend
