17th April 2026

It has been wonderful to welcome the class back after the Easter break, and we are especially delighted to have welcomed our newest member, Heidi, to Year 4.
This week, we spent time reflecting on our fantastic trip to the Batchworth Canal Centre. The children thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the day by watching the video on Google Classroom, and we were incredibly proud to hear from the staff that Year 4 was the most polite and thoughtful class they have welcomed all year.
In Science, we began our new topic on Electricity. The children explored a range of everyday electrical appliances and discussed the importance of using them safely.
In English, we have started our new unit on suspense stories, focusing on “hiding the threat.” To engage the class, we began with a sound-guessing game, which sparked lots of interesting and varied ideas. We then explored how nighttime noises and darkness can create a sense of mystery and tension, before learning the opening paragraph of our model text.
In Maths, we have been learning about decimals and making links between fractions and decimals. The children practised dividing one- and two-digit numbers by ten, developing their understanding that digits move one place to the right on the place value chart. The Gattegno chart has been a particularly effective tool for helping to visualise this concept.
In PSHE, we discussed what makes each of us unique. The children generated a wide range of thoughtful ideas, including appearance, fingerprints, opinions, beliefs, heritage, likes and dislikes, and aspirations. They then created posters to celebrate and showcase their individuality.
Finally, we enjoyed planting strawberry seeds as part of St Mary’s sustainability project to develop an edible garden. We are looking forward to watching them grow over the coming weeks. So many green fingered members of the class!
