19th June

This week in Maths, we have been exploring different types of quadrilaterals (2D shapes with four sides) and polygons (closed 2D shapes with straight sides). We also investigated lines of symmetry, including horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. The children enjoyed using Numicon to demonstrate their understanding and explain their mathematical reasoning.
In Art, we used Sylvanian Families characters and accessories to create miniature scenes. The children carefully observed their chosen setup before using charcoal to sketch it in detail. They then wrote an accompanying sentence to describe their artwork.
In English, we completed our Reading Comprehension assessments. Well done to the class for the focus, resilience and concentration they showed throughout. Inspired by our class reader, Who Let the Gods Out, we wrote persuasive letters to Thanatos, encouraging him to release Virgo. We also analysed our model text and identified examples of the persuasive writing toolkit that we will use in our own writing.
In RE, we explored the story of Adam and Eve and created newspaper reports about the events. On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Karl and Celine back to school to lead an engaging session. The children were introduced to the Ten Commandments and learned a series of creative actions linked to each commandment. This provided a fun and memorable way to remember these important teachings.
In PSHE, we explored different emotions and discussed how we experience and express them. We also continued to enjoy our weekly Walk and Talk sessions. This week’s ‘Would You Rather?’ questions sparked some lively conversations and provided a great opportunity for the children to chat with someone new.
In History, we learned about the Greek gods and goddesses who lived on Mount Olympus. The children selected a deity to research before creating an illustrated fact file to showcase their learning.
For the past two weeks, we have been trialling a new seating arrangement. The children are now given a new seat each Monday and remain there for the week. This approach encourages them to work with a wider range of classmates, while developing collaboration, adaptability and tolerance. Previously, seating arrangements were changed once each half term, and we have been pleased with how positively the children have responded to this new routine.
In Spelling, we have been learning about the suffix -ation. We discovered that adding this suffix often changes a verb into a noun, for example: tempt → temptation.
In Guided Reading, we read an extract from A House Without Walls. The thoughtful discussion that followed about the experiences of refugee children highlighted what a compassionate, reflective and insightful group of pupils Year 4 are. Their empathy and maturity made us incredibly proud.
