At St Mary’s, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to explore and develop leadership qualities. Leadership is not only about guiding others but also about fostering confidence, responsibility, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions. To achieve this, we offer a range of opportunities for pupils to take on leadership roles that shape their school experience, while nurturing skills that will serve them throughout their lives. These leadership skills are essential, as they provide a foundation for success in school, the workplace, and in the wider world. Through these experiences, we prepare our pupils to be proactive, compassionate, and effective leaders, equipped to make a positive impact wherever they go.
Leadership Across the School
We encourage leadership across the school through the School Council, Eco Council, Ethos Council, and Sports Council, where children take an active role in shaping their school experience. Each council is represented by two children from each year group, from Year 1 to Year 6. These positions are elected democratically by the children in each class, ensuring that every pupil has a voice in the leadership of our school.
Year 6 Positions of Responsibility
Our Year 6 pupils take on a Position of Responsibility, which is earned through a democratic process where both pupils and staff vote for their leaders. These positions give all children the opportunity to have a voice in the school’s decision-making and to serve as role models for younger pupils. These positions not only foster a sense of pride and responsibility but also provide pupils with the chance to give back to the school community. Through their leadership, they gain a deeper understanding of the importance of service, collaboration and working together for the benefit of the whole school community.
