St Mary's Rickmansworth Church of England Primary School Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing; together shining a light

PE

Intent

Our PE curriculum is designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes for physical education – both now and into the future. We strive for our children to lead a healthy, active lifestyle and promote life-long participation within sport and physical activity.

We encourage our children to be the best version of themselves, nurturing their physical, social, cognitive and emotional development. We embed the School Games Values - honesty, teamwork, respect, self-belief, passion and determination. These support our children in becoming well-rounded individuals who carry these values into all areas of life.

We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to flourish in physical activities. We encourage all children to be physically active through a range of different opportunities. By the time children leave St Mary’s they will have been taught the skills to become physically literate.

Implementation

At St Mary’s, we are committed to delivering a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that is inclusive, progressive, and promotes a love of physical activity. To achieve this, we have implemented the following approaches:

  • All children receive two hours of PE teaching each week, delivered through engaging and well-structured lessons.
  • Every child is supported to access and participate fully in PE lessons.
  • We follow a comprehensive and inclusive PE scheme (Complete PE) across the school, ensuring consistency and quality in teaching and learning.
  • Lessons provide opportunities to develop and improve physical literacy, building confidence and competence in movement.
  • Our skills-based curriculum allows children in EYFS and KS1 to focus on developing fundamental movement skills, which are then applied to a variety of sports and activities in KS2.
  • Each class follows a clear PE overview that ensures progression of skills across year groups and key stages.
  • PE lessons focus on the development of the whole child, incorporating physical, social, emotional, and thinking skills.
  • Teachers support, encourage and challenge all children, ensuring they are engaged and able to achieve their personal best.
  • In Year 4, children attend swimming lessons, developing essential water safety and swimming competence.
  • Movement breaks and active learning strategies are used across the school day to promote physical activity beyond PE lessons.
  • The school actively celebrates National Sports Week and participates in national initiatives such as National Fitness Day and Sport Relief, promoting wider awareness and enjoyment of physical activity.
  •

To enable children to practise and apply the skills learned in PE, we offer a range of enriching opportunities:

  • Participation in stay active sessions, healthy hero sessions, inter-school competitions, family festivals, leagues and events organised through the Sports Partnership and PE lead.
  • Annual Sports Day and Sports Week celebrations.
  • A variety of extra-curricular activities before, during, and after school to allow children to develop their skills in different contexts.
  • In Year 5, children are trained as Play Leaders, enabling them to support and lead physical activities for younger children on the playground, fostering responsibility and leadership.
  • Our active Sports Council gives children a voice in shaping the future of sport and PE within the school.
  •

Our approach ensures that all children are given the opportunity to aspire, nurture their talents, and flourish through physical activity—together shining a light on the importance of health, teamwork, and lifelong participation in sport.

Impact

Our curriculum aims to promote the well-being and fitness of all children at St Mary’s, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and discipline PE promotes. We encourage every children to aspire, be nurtured and flourish as they grow, together shining a light on the importance of healthy, active living. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these physical and underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy, healthy and physically active lives. We want our children to have a positive mind-set towards a healthy and active lifestyle and use this mind-set across all areas of school life and moving forward.

We measure the impact of our curriculum by:

  • Pupil voice
  • Learning walks
  • Summative Assessment
  • Formative Assessment
  • Engagement in physical activity
